David Blacker of Fence Installers explains that whilst wooden posts look nice, since legislation has come in restricting the chemicals that can be used to treat wooden posts, while that’s good news from a safety point of view, it does mean that the posts aren’t protected enough to last very long, perhaps 4 years. As a result, most people choose concrete posts.

And if you’re using concrete posts, logic suggests you have concrete gravel boards. These are either 6 inch or 12 inch concrete boards which the wooden fences sit on top of, to prevent them from being in contact with the ground, and thus rotting.

What height do you want your fence to be in total?

The use of gravel boards influences the choice of the height of the fence panels. For example, if you want a fence that’s six feet high, you can either have 12 inch gravel boards with 5 foot fence panels, or 6 inch gravel boards with fence panels that are 5 foot 6 inches high.
